Irregularly shaped shipments, or “ugly freight,” make it difficult to figure out what will fit together in a truck or shipping container. Cost efficiency is vital, and carriers must be able to effectively consolidate shipments to get the most out of available capacity.
The Solution
Using GPC Systems software with the Intel RealSense camera, companies can automatically calculate the overall dimensions of an irregularly shaped shipment from a photo taken by the camera. The system saves the time and money spent manually measuring shipments and ensures accurate billing. For air cargo, accurate data means cargo holds are always flying at maximum capacity and flights aren’t delayed by shipments that don’t fit—meaning the system quickly pays for itself.
How does it work?
- The dimensioning software is opened on the device with an Intel camera attached.
- The camera is aimed at the box/pallet, and a real-time wireframe box surrounds the object within the camera’s view. Prompts guide the user in taking a good image.
- The photo is captured, and dimensions are provided. Dimensions can be automatically synced with backend systems.
Is it accurate?
- Digital measurements are typically within 1 inch of actual measurements.
