Stratix Custom Fix Saves Airline Thousands

Case Study

Gone are the days when airline pilots had to drag cases full of traditional paper-based flight manuals, charts, and other documentation required for flight operations as they moved around. Now, they use Electronic Flight Books (EFB), which are tablets loaded with all the critical flight-related information they need in a more efficient, organized, and accessible format.

For its EFB solution, one of the world’s largest airlines uses iPad with a case for all its pilots. iPad is lightweight, powerful, and user-friendly. However, the case chosen to go with it had a problem.

The Challenge

Soon after pilots were given iPad EFBs, they reported that the case was breaking at the edge of the camera lens opening. It appeared that any excessive force used to remove iPad from the case caused a stress fracture that eventually cracked completely. While the airline could have replaced the cases with a different brand, the cost of that multiplied across thousands of pilots was going to be extremely expensive.

Stratix Specialty Products Group to the Rescue

The Stratix Specialty Products Group engineered, 3D printed, and tested a plastic sleeve that reinforces the vulnerable area of the iPad case. It’s intended not to be noticeable and blends in with the original case design.

The Result

The simple and inexpensive solution engineered by the Stratix Specialty Products Group means the airline doesn’t have to purchase thousands of replacement cases. It’s a significant saving in a competitive industry where every penny counts.
